I’ve been putting this off for a long time. There is always a reason why “I can’t start today”. I am a champion procrastinator. This blog was originally set up while I was living in suburban California and entertaining the idea of picking up and moving to rural Texas to homestead with my family. It was meant to document the transition from my current life to the next phase. Well here I sit in rural Texas on our homestead. I’ve been here for over a year now. Over the course of the past year there have been many good “reasons why” I haven’t started writing. However, in the last few weeks I’ve been toying with the idea of finally getting started. Today I finally found a reason to start.
Springtime in Texas is overwhelming. It feels like a roller coaster ride. The wildflowers are stunning. The weather can be amazing or nerve wracking; oftentimes both in the course of a single day. Allergy symptoms are off the charts. There is life and growth everywhere. And being that it is spring, the farm animals are looking to get lucky. In particular, one Heritage Bronze tom turkey aptly named Tom.
Our lady turkeys began laying eggs about a month ago and in hopes of producing baby turkeys the eggs were turned over to a pair of broody chickens. These chickens are insane. They puff their feathers out and tuck the eggs under themselves. Growl and bite if you get near them. They make me think of the game Angry Birds. You don’t mess with their eggs. Today all that hard work paid off in the form of a baby turkey poult staggering around the coop.
So there it is. Our first birth here at Red Bird Ranch. As good a reason as any to start a blog.
