What A Difference A Week Makes

From one baby turkey to seven, a truckload of chickens, and now we’re going into business…A lot can happen in a week.

It all started with a simple question. “I’m looking to buy local pastured eggs. Do you all produce enough eggs to sell 65 dozen a week?” Not even close. I mean, we are flush with eggs. Our girls lay on average 12-20 eggs a day. We eat eggs, the dog eats eggs, the pigs eat eggs. Eggs get bartered for local produce. But 65 dozen a week, no way. Wait…someone wants to buy eggs from us? So what would it take to produce that many eggs? What if we couldn’t produce THAT many, but more than we have been.

Fast forward a week and we now have 60 more chickens than we did last Friday. We’ve been to a farmer’s market info meeting and are gearing up to sell there. We’ve made contact with the new cafe in town and are working to get certified so that we can sell to them. We’ve also talked with a butcher about our idea for pastured pigs. And, we are going have all these turkeys.

We’ve talked off and on over the last year about ways to make some money to put back into the farm. Suddenly all those discussions are becoming realities. So here we go.
